We can say it in the mirror 100 times a day. I am beautiful.
But honestly, has that ever helped anyone gain self confidence and increase self worth?
We can share memes and quotes and articles that resonate, but after the initial reaction and share, does anyone remember it the next day?
We can read books, listen to tapes or CD’s, watch videos on how to be what we want to be, but how long after the watching/reading do we continue the practice?
My own habit is to read that book or listen to that CD and nod all the way through. Yes! that is exactly what I should do or yes! I totally get that! or Yes! I will begin the practice TODAY!
Then, inevitably, something or someone says or does something that brings up a visceral, very old, conditioned response and whammo. All the small steps we make to gain self worth, to gain a feeling of I am good enough, to gain confidence falls over the cliff in a matter of minutes.
Old reaction, old response, same old, same old, right back to where we started.
We can all quote many of the more popular self help gurus. We quote and nod and still, we feel inferior, unattractive, unloved, unworthy, unaware, invisible………
So what needs to change for us to believe what we are reading, seeing, hearing?
I believe we need to direct our attention to this moment.
Why is it people set up new years resolutions? Setting up a goal in a moment that has not arrived and more likely than not, will never follow through. It is like setting yourself up for failure.
If my intention is to get healthy, I practice that, one step, one moment at a time.
In this moment, I eat a healthy meal.
In this moment, you fixed a healthy meal.
IN this moment, you sat down, expressed gratitude, and enjoyed the healthy meal.
In this moment, you cleaned off the table and washed your dishes.
In this moment, You did the best you could in that moment.
you are not setting yourself up for failure.
In this moment, you are perfect.
